Kohler Art Center
Richard Notkin in the 70's. You can just barely see some of the brick work that is in some of his more current work. I have taken a workshop from Richard. He is a very political artist and comments on the state of affairs in our world. Look him up. I talked to him yesterday and reminded him about where we met. He said the one thing he remembered about his visit to Tucson was that the toilets backed up during his workshop. He quickly qualified that with the fact that it wasn't the only thing he remembered, but totally stopped talking after that. ;).
Pregnant Woman- much better in person.
Deer Grill
Hippo!
Interlocking brick wall

Sgraffito! (Leila!!)
New take on urinals.
This is 2 feet wide
If you can, enlarge this to see the individual tiles. It's about all the bad things we do to ourselves
The torso, upper arms and thighs are cloth.
There are 6 done up bathrooms. This is just one.
Disappointed -Kohler
1st stop, Kohler Design Center. Some very disappointed people when it was discovered that we would see the Design Center and the Arts Center but not the factory. I am severely disappointed. The only factory tour was scheduled for the Collectors Tour, which was a high end tour for people who donate to the arts. The poor lady that had to tell everyone, had to deal with telling everyone that there was no way to see the factory. So she called around and made a quick slide show for us to see.
These first photos are from the Design Center. Many of these pieces are from a show in the 70's The claim to fame for this show was it was one of the first and biggest of its kind where clay work shifted from craft to art.

EARLY!
Sitting on the bus that goes to Kohler. I woke up at 2:30am and never went back to sleep. I may be able to catch a few catnaps on the bus on this all day tour. Part of me wishes I was staying here all day for the trade show and gallery expo. I will fit it all in tomorrow.

Day 1
FonZie!?! And frozen river.
Mushroom and green bean vegetarian soup in a bread bowl. The two bottles of wine I bought that were on the wine flight.
In my hotel room. Argh, I miss
Kayaking.
I met four really nice kids in the hot tub at the hotel. All from Iowa and very into Clay, young and enthusiastic. I also met a nice teacher from W. Va on the shuttle bus (Andrea). Funny we were both thinking about buying the Cheesehead hats. She was thinking of buying one for her child (age3)and I was thinking of buying one for my grand child(age 3) It makes me very excited to see the young people that are here that are so enthusiastic about Clay. I guess in my job I don't see the young pups very often. I sure hope there are kids to carry on our tradition.
Milwaukee.
Okay. So I am here. It is really really cold. I went walking around after I got here and got my registration. My head started to hurt really really bad. I didn't know what was going on. Suddenly I realized my head was really really cold. So I put my hood onwith the raccoon fur fringe. Once I put my hood on my head stopped hurting. It is really cold here, the river is frozen.
